OUR HISTORY
It was 2018 when Geeked On Africa was formed in Dallas, Texas. For a year, GOA was an entertainment and political news blog publishing “listicles” on African topics, with a team of writers and editors based in Africa and America. We were a small group of academics, educators and creatives with a passion for Africa. While we enjoyed the work we were doing, it became obvious we desired to create more meaningful content and soon set about turning Geeked On Africa into a “real” publishing company.
OUR MISSION
It is our goal to see Geeked On Africa become a trusted and loved publishing company, a company with a team reflecting the diversity of Africa, a go-to for literature and educational resources about Africa publishing up to 20 resources a year.
OUR SPECIALITIES
GOA exists to serve African readers. We publish literature and resources for readers aged 5-21.
WHY THE MEERKAT MASCOT?
Picking a company mascot and deciding on a logo can be so hard. Many business owners agonize over their logo for months. When Geeked On Africa first went online in 2018, the logo wasn’t that important so we simply made a logo for free using online software. We picked an owl as the mascot because it seemed like a good animal to represent a website based on gathering and sharing information, and there were also a lot of free owl images available and legal to use online. So it was as simple as that.
Now that Geeked On Africa is stepping into a new stage, we wanted to pick a mascot that has real meaning. And the meerkat clicked for several reasons:
- Meerkat packs are led by a female matriarch, and GOA is a female owned and female led company.
- Meerkats raise pups as a “village” and isn’t “It takes a village to raise a child” one of the greatest African proverbs of all time?
- Meerkats keep their circle tight and this applies to keeping the company lean and bringing only the best on board.
- Meerkats know when to go underground and when to stand tall on the surface observing their environment or basking in the sun, likewise, we will ride the publication cycle and hope you’ll love what we have to offer.
